Tauba Auerbach:
Folds
Bergen Kunsthall /
Sternberg Press
This book, commissioned by Bergen Kunsthall and published by Sternberg Press, was designed to coincide with Tauba Auerbach's exhibition Tetrachromat. It presents Auerbach’s ongoing series of Fold paintings for the first time in book form. In her Fold paintings, Auerbach molds large pieces of canvas by pleating, folding, or rolling, and then lays them flat and covers their surfaces with a spray gun. The paint is applied at different angles in order to highlight the topologies of the canvas. The canvas is then stretched flat leaving a Trompe-l'œil of three-dimensional space. Transferred to the medium of the book, the paintings are presented in new and unexpected ways, each relating to dimensions of space. The book features mathematical diagrams of complex surfaces and texts by Edwin Abbott Abbott, Emmanuelle Dauplay and Italo Calvino.
